It may actually make the event more special because you and your guests might actually be able to remember all of the fun that you had!

During this economy crisis, many families will need to scale back or be a little more resourceful with how they spend their money to provide their children with a good summer and still make ends meet. For some, it may seem like an impossible task, but really it’s not. Here are 3 tips for families to use to get out while not causing too much of a strain to the family budget:

Medium and large families should always buy a membership to local attractions and museums. If you have more than 3 children, chances are it is never feasible to purchase tickets for a single trip to your local kids museum or playland. Any frugal fashionista can see how their family will benefit from purchasing a membership, which is often offered, instead.

An annual membership to your favorite attractions could save you a considerable amount of money. Most of them do not put a limit on the size of the family that will use them, so whether you have 3 kids or 13 children, your family would be covered. Many of these memberships allow for unlimited daily visits for the duration of the membership, which can be for one or two years. These programs also offer great incentives like free passes for other family or friends, coupons or discounts for other attractions, and free parking passes. Your upfront cost may be $50-150, but after a couple of visits, the membership will eventually pay for itself! Plus, this economy crisis is provoking more organizations to reduce these membership costs even more to get more people to purchase them. This is definitely the time to get it on the deals and your family could spend their summer coming and going to these places when you want.

Research and map out all of the free attractions in your area. Planning is key to having a fabulous time this summer. Your upcoming “engineer” or “architect” have lots of great times making towns out of old cereal boxes or boxes from packages. For this activity, all that you need are scrap paper, crayons or markers, and a lot of imagination. For boys, it’s a lot of fun because they can explore these “towns” with those die-cast cars, trucks, and action figures that you can buy for cheap at any dollar store.

Learn a craft together! It’s almost magic when a parent and child learn something new together. An economy crisis, such as what our world is experiencing, can create the need to learn some of the old time skills that people can use for saving, cost cutting, and meeting their basic needs. It’s more cost effective to do it this way because if you simply go through the papers without a list in mind, you might end up buying products that you weren’t originally going to get, causing you to spend more money than you had planned on spending.

Your Sunday paper is an excellent source for coupons. Sunday papers generally have inserts as well, which contain coupons for a wide array of products.

It’s not a bad idea to consider buying a subscription to your local paper. Sometimes, you can even get subscriptions just for the Sunday edition. It saves money to do this rather than to simply buy one every Sunday morning.

There are other papers, called circulars, that usually come several times a week and also contain coupons. You can usually find several good coupons in them, but it makes sense to cut out the ones that you need and save them as the circulars can really add up over time. A good coupon organizer is a great way to keep your coupons organized after you have clipped them.

Circulars, as well as your Sunday paper, are good resources for coupons because they are usually targeted to your local area stores. This comes in handy when you redeem your coupons because they are more likely to be relevant to your area.

Also, don’t forget to check the grocery stores themselves for coupons. Some grocery stores keep copies of the stores specials near the entrance of the store. This is also a good way to see what is on sale within the store, even if the papers don’t contain coupons.

You don’t want to get in the checkout lane and find that your coupon has expired so remember to check expiration dates before clipping and using coupons. If you’re clipping a coupon and you see that it’s going to expire the next day, and you weren’t planning on shopping for a few days, it might not make sense to cut that particular one out.

Lastly, watch for value days and double coupons days, usually advertised in the paper. If you use your coupons on these days, you can get even more out of your savings.
