How To Get College Grants In This Depression

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

Today Getting College Grants is much harder then it was a few years ago when the economy was booming. But don’t despair, with the Obama administration in power there should not be a decrease in college grants. Of course with this downturn in the economy Non-Profit Organizations will very likely cut the number of college grants. The major problem regarding college grants and the economy is that since more parents are out of work, they smiply cannot afford to pay for their college bound students and this has lead to many more students applying for Financial Aid.

Traditionally before college loans and grants many college students had jobs that paid for their college tuition. But with the downturn in the economy even this age old system is breaking down because many companys that gladly hired college students in the boom years are simply not hiring them now. So students have less money and this of course is putting more pressure on all grant giving institutions.

$143 Billion Dollar Increase in College Student Financial Aid has been reported by The College Board, now this is great news but the bad economy is reflected in another figure. In the year 2008 the number of students who applied for The Free Application For Student Aid rose to 10.4% from 1.4 million 2007. This means there are many more of your fellow college students competing for these same grants. So learning some grant winning tricks and tips could be a big plus in putting yourself ahead of the crowd.

In order to increase your chances of Getting College Grants in This Recession you have to make an effort to do well in your High School or College test and to get good grades. Strive to raise your Grade-Point Average so that you will have more options when it comes to choosing where you will be studying. This will also give you much higher chances of getting more substantial College Grants and Scholarships.

Apply, Apply and Apply is the key to success in Getting College Grants In This Recession. Don’t think of just applying to State Colleges, follow your dreams and apply to your Dream Private Universities too! You never know if you will be accepted in one of them! Also having been accepted in many colleges is great but it gets better because you can now pick-out the one with the Best College Financial Aid. So get your applications in the mail tomorrow!

The top rated universities have very expensive tuitions of course, but you should not be discouraged by this and sent your applications to them all. In fact these top rated schools are the ones that give out much larger grants. By the way, Merit Aid from private schools may be your college money answer if you don’t get full college financial aid.

Lastly, to increase your chances of obtaining College Grants In This Recession remember don’t overlook all of your application documentation/paperwork. Most grant institutions wll require 1 Your personal ID and 2 Proof of Registration in the the college where you will be attending.

One of the biggest myths in the area of college grants is “You should stop applying for grants when you get into college” This is simply foolish, you will be in school for four very long years and you may add a Masters/Doctorate to your education. This is a tremendous amount of money going out before you ever get that first paycheck from an employer. So just because you are a student you can also be a grant seeker too! Don’t stop applying for grants until your last day of college. (c) 2009 Mark S. Greenglass Ph.D.

The Parents Guide To Making A Frugal Fashionista Out Of Your College Student During An Economy Crisis

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

Parents want their kids to fit in when they leave the nest and start to make their way in college. But during this economy crisis, it can be really hard for families to meet the fashion needs of their college age kids because of the high mall and retail prices for the latest styles. That being said, it doesn’t have to be that way. Parents can help their college student to become a frugal fashionista saving, cost-cutting, yet still looking great. Here’s how:

Always put thrift shops on the shopping agenda. Thrift shops have become the fashion mecca for young college students looking to buy for cheap cool clothes to style in. Any frugal fashionista that shops the thrift stores knows that you will find exceptionally hip clothes from the brands that they just can’t do without.

Another alternative is to teach your frugal fashionista all about working the consignment stores. They can take their gently used clothes to these consignment shops and trade them for cash or store credit. Not only will be they be recycling and helping our earth, but they will be helping themselves too. They can take the money that they earn and use it for other things such as travel expenses or food if they would like.

Get her started with online shopping through Ebay and other classified websites like Craigslist and Freecycle. By using the free classified sites, your college frugal fashionista has the chance to get gobs of clothes completely free, which is the only better than having a chance to buy for cheap. But, make sure to tell her to always travel with 2 or more friends when going to retrieve freebies.

Ebay on the other hand is a wonderful alternative to shopping in the stores. Your college student could get the top brands and got-to-have’s of the season at up to 90% off of the retail price! It’s a great way to buy for cheap and get the styles that make her feel good.

Leave off the high priced boutiques and make the low-price retailers your favorite shopping spots! Your frugal fashionista will be able to get all of the top brands and mall-store clothes right at the local discount retail shops like Ross, TJ MAXX, and Marshalls. At these bargain “boutiques”, college students can expect to save as much as 75% off of the regular prices!

Being a frugal fashionista does call for some compromising. Buying items second hand or at the discount retailers may require her to do a little fixing or there may be some tiny flaws, however, the savings will justify buying it. It’s best to buy for cheap and get fantastic styles and deals than to spend every dime that you have trying to be super chic. Another small piece of advice for frugal fashionistas, do your best not to buy clothes that require dry cleaning. In the long run, they could cost you more than you saved!
