Ideas For Cheap Vacations

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

by Alexandra Vrugt

Everybody needs a break at some point. Who can’t use and appreciate a restful vacation? But, a vacation seems to lose some of its relaxation when there is a big price tag attached to it. It is so much better when you can buy for cheap a great vacation package that your family can enjoy without returning with empty pockets.

Here are a few ways to save on your next vacation:

1. Try a website like Priceline.com or Hotwire.com where you can either choose your own pricing for hotels, flights, and car rentals, or you can exercise flexibility with regard to the hotel name and save a ton of money. These websites can offer discounts as high as 70% off of the regular rate!

2. Swap houses! This is a popular way to save on vacation costs. There are plenty of people in some really cool and exotic places that are willing to switch homes for a period of time. You may only have to pay a portion of the utilities to cover your stay. Imagine being able to buy for cheap a Paris vacation home or London flat! Craigslist.org is a great place to look for people that are willing to make a swap. Do your best to investigate the area of the vacation home and get plenty of pictures from the owners. Of course, make sure to always check references and never leave anything of considerable value in your home. Even though you want to save, you always want to be safe.

3. Consider listening to a time-share pitch. These 2 hour meetings are worth every moment that you get to spend in the luxury hotel that they usually put you up in. Many times, they will throw in a show or free dinner for two. Remember, just because you listen to someone trying to sell you on the idea for a couple of hours doesn’t mean that you have to actually buy. But, if you do decide to go into it, time-shares are another way of possibly saving on vacations and future travel.

4. Join a vacation club or use a rewards program to save! These two options will allow you to buy for cheap and without paying in a lump sum. Vacation clubs are usually an installment program that will allow you to save a few dollars at a time. The members also have access to different deals and savings programs that other are not privy to. Reward programs are fabulous ways to get free hotel nights, car rentals, or upgrades. They are also perfect savings tools because most reward programs do not require you to pay anything! You sign up for free and accumulate points or rewards toward free future travel. Sometimes, you don’t even have to buy anything before you start receiving insider travel discounts. Either way, you can’t go wrong!

Low Cost Orlando Vacation Package Tips

Monday, April 6th, 2009

For many travelers an Orlando vacation package is the dream of a lifetime. Why would it not be when you think of all the Orlando area has to offer? Not only are there the four Disney World theme parks and two water parks but also Sea World and Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure. Whatever your age, be it two years old or eighty years old or anywhere in between, there is something for everyone.

A common challenge for many folks is finding an affordable Orlando vacation, because the costs of your travel, accommodation, meals, and theme park admissions can be daunting. But there are some things you can do to keep Orlando vacation expenses to a minimum and here are some tips on how to do that:

* Although booking separate flights, accommodation, car hire and theme park tickets may seem to give you more flexibility, this is often the most expensive option. Instead it is worth checking out companies that offer these as a complete Orlando vacation package. Reputable firms often get huge discounts and are able to pass the savings onto you.

* Try to be flexible about the dates you want to travel: If you can only travel during peak periods, you will certainly pay premium prices. However, if you can travel at off-peak times, you’ll find a great number of deals from which to choose. A greater flexibility in your vacation dates will give you a much wider opportunity to find a cheap Orlando vacation package.

* It is well worth doing research to find out if any of the thousands of hotels offer accommodation extras. If you can find a hotel that offers deals on length of stay and also includes some theme park passes these often work out as better value for money than a similar hotel nearby that has a non-negotiable room rate per night and with no other extras included.

* Review your options for theme park tickets. Different Orlando vacation packages will present you with a multitude of options for theme park tickets and it’s up to you to figure out what’s really important for your own vacation. For example, an apparently less expensive package may cost you a lot more if your plans include repeat visits to the Magic Kingdom and your package price doesn’t cover them all.

* Think about timeshares: If you’re looking for a cheap Orlando vacation and you’re not a timeshare owner, check out the resort companies that offer unbelievably cheap Orlando vacations in return for sitting through a sales presentation. If you’re prepared to give up an hour or two of your time and you have no problem in resisting the very slick and persuasive marketing messages, you’re unlikely to find any better bargain.

So if you work with these tips, you can have that once-in-a-lifetime vacation to Orlando for less than you might have initially thought. Time and effort is required to do the necessary research, but you’ll end up with an Orlando vacation package that meets all your needs and saves your cash into the bargain!

Snack and Save

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

Children have to eat. Parents have to feed children, and for the most part, they enjoy doing it. That being said, it costs money to fulfill that obligation. Actually, feeding your children could be one of the costliest ventures of your life. Spending a lot on snacks can quickly amass to small fortune if parents aren’t penny wise with their buying.

It is only natural for parents to want their children to have the best and be happy. Here are a few ways to give them what they want without breaking the bank:

1. Take advantage of the “season”! Whether or not you celebrate the year end holidays, you can still take full advantage of all of the great money saving opportunities. In late September or early October, many restaurant chains such as McDonalds and Wendy’s offer discount coupons for Halloween. They usually offer the coupons for free items such as an apple pie or Frosty shake in books, or sheets, of 8-12 coupons. The cost of these coupon packets is $1. So, you could potentially get 12 snack items for your children at a cost of only $1. This is a huge deal because if you bought each item without using the coupon, it would cost you about $15!! The other wonderful thing about these coupons is that, although they are offered around Halloween, most of them do not expire until December 31st of the offer year.

2. Surveys pay! Every time you splurge and get something to eat at many restaurants such as Burger King, or regionally local eateries such as Sonics, you may find a request, on your receipt, for you to complete a survey regarding your visit. These surveys pay out in a big way. Many of them offer a “buy one, get one free” offer or money off of future purchases. While, yes, they do keep you coming back, they also keep you saving. Look at it this way; you may want to spend an afternoon out with your child. Instead of paying for two hamburgers, you pay for one but get two!

3. Use coupons…all of the time! There are so many great deals available in your Sunday paper, online, or even in the supermarket aisles. Coupons are one of the best ways to save money on just about anything. Truth be told, not only will you see savings, you will probably get tons of free snacks for your family. Many stores double manufacturers’ coupons. Watch the weekly sale papers or visit your favorite store online to view the weekly specials. Cull your coupons, organize them, and use them when there are deals on the snacks that you and your family want.

You don’t need a mint to feed your children if you just employ a few cost saving tactics. If you stay abreast of the sales and coupon offerings, your family can enjoy a deliciously rich lifestyle for less!

Asking For Bargains

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

Deals are everywhere. Most of us simply go after the published specials or discounts. These low price offers can be found on signs, in circulars, or online. We rely on these price indicators to determine what is a real bargain versus a sales gimmick to get you into the store. It’s how we know the “real” price of the products that we want and need. While these offers are wonderful and much needed, they only represent some of the actual discount opportunities that exist. The others that are out there are usually only available on an “ask for” basis. In other words, they exist but no one will tell you about them unless you ask!

In some cultures, asking for a discount is expected. It is as if no one expects to pay the ticket prices. However, with the economic issues that many nations are facing, asking (or even haggling) for lower prices is becoming more common and much more accepted. Here are a few industries in which you can ask for lower prices and be confident that you could actually receive them:

1. Hospitality Industry - Hotel discounts can be found all over the place. But, some of the deepest discounts can be obtained by simply calling and speaking with a customer service representative. Often, if the hotel is not booked or it is a slow season, hotel representatives and managers may offer you great price just to get something on a room. Your discount request does not have to be limited to one room either. If you need a few rooms, the manager may be even more inclined to give you a price break.

2. Restaurants - There is almost always a “house special” going on at a restaurant. Always make a point of asking whether there are any in-house discounts available when dining out. Some of the national pizza chains also offer unpublished in-house specials that you can get only if you ask for them. You can expect to receive anything from 2-for-1 deals to deeply discounted menu items. On rare occasions, restaurants may even allow you to double up on deals, which could allow you to get your meal practically free.

3. Airline and car rentals - Priceline.com is a fabulous website for finding low prices and for setting your own price for travel. The key to using this service is to put the lowest price ever, even if sounds absolutely absurd, and work your way up. Don’t just assume that the airlines or car rental agencies won’t go for your low-ball price. They just may, but you will never know if you don’t try it. Of course, calling directly is a great way to get to those unpublished offers. Like the hospitality industry, when airlines and car rental agencies are experiencing lows, they are more apt to give you on-site discounts. For these, you may need to speak, face-to-face with an agent or manager. You can expect discounts from 10% to upgrades and possibly free future travel or rentals.

4. Telecommunications - Telecommunications companies always publish their prices for their customers and they are always offering some type of “special”. But, the real deals can be found when you speak directly with a customer service agent. Talk to them about your calling patterns and ask for a package deal that will combine your home, internet, and possibly, cell phone. You can even do a price comparison with a rival company and let the potential company know that are shopping around for the best deal. They want your business and may be able to tailor a package to suit your needs at just the price that you want…or lower!

Asking for something that you want is human nature. Doing it effectively to get great deals to save you and your family money is a skill that you can’t afford not to learn and use. Just remember, the deals are out there and they are waiting for you, but be humble and honest when you ask for them, and always ask with a smile.
