Energy Efficient Light Bulbs - Putting Dollars Back In The Bank

Sunday, August 9th, 2009

One of the most difficult considerations when you decide to implement energy efficient light bulbs in your home is price. Since each energy efficient light bulb will cost you about $5 each, it is clever to stop for a moment and ask yourself what your Return On Revenue (ROI) will be.

As I was visiting the GE Lighting website (which I have no affiliation with), I found a very useful tool for calculating cost savings if you install energy saving light bulbs. This calculator assumes that you use a light for 4-hours a day and a electricity rate of 10c/kWh. It then show you how much money you will save by installing energy saving light bulbs.

By only swapping out 4 100-Watt standard light bulbs with 4 x 26-Watt energy efficient light bulbs, it is calculated that indeed over 1 year you will be saving $42.22. The reason I used 4 x 100-Watt bulbs as an example is only because that is how many we have in our TV room.

In my house I found 40 x 100-Watt bulbs, 25 x 60-Watt bulbs and 4-track bulbs. According to the GE savings calculator I will have an annual electricity savings of $625 if I will replace all my standard bulbs with energy saving light bulbs. That being said, to go and buy 65 energy saving light bulbs for this project, it will cost me $325.

To establish how much of our investment we will get back in the first year: ROI= [(Payback - Investment)/Investment)]*100 [(625-325) / 625)] * 100 48%

During the first year we will see a return on our investment of 48%. As I was looking at these numbers it became evident that it will be smart to upgrade to energy efficient light bulbs, even if in the beginning it will cost us some money.

Cutting cost is in the numbers. Changing one 100-Watt bulb to a smart energy efficient bulb, will save you $10/year. The average home has between 50-100 bulbs. Considering the increase of energy rates, this would indeed be one of the smartest things to you for your family.

Why Pay Retail Prices for Kids Clothing When You Don’t Have To?

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

Tell me a good shopper that does not enjoy a great sale. Whether you are cutting down your budget to save money or just looking to get more for your dollar when you shop for kids clothing does not matter. Saving money is the bottom line.

People today do not have the disposable income that once lined our pockets. Department stores are feeling the crunch as well and cannot afford to have sales because their overall sales are already much lower than they have been in the past. This means full price all the time.

It is almost refreshing when you see a company that is looking at the everyday person and pricing things so that we can actually get the finer things in life without the big ticket prices that often come with them. It is nice to finally be able to buy your kids the best clothing available and not having to take a second job in order to do so.

www.growinggrowinggone.ca is committed to bringing monster discounts to the kids clothing shopper each and every day. While a department store will make a fuss over 10% off, 30% off or more is the norm here. The prices are actually unbelievable at times.

How they do it we do not know or care, but the fact remains that they have a great selection of clothing far below retail prices. You will find clothing for newborns as well as the early grade school years. It is the perfect store to hit for those back to school clothes.

Normally you would expect a site like this to be an outlet of some major clothing company, but that is hardly the case here. This is a business that is run by ?just another mom looking to help out her fellow moms?. It is refreshing to see someone who is willing to share the benefits of all of her hard work and real life experiences with everyone else. If you want great discounts, check out www.growinggrowinggone.ca.

15 Ways To Save Money On Car Insurance

Sunday, July 26th, 2009

Everybody hates bills, so why should car insurance premiums be any different. And just like other bills, such as cable, grocery shopping, and electricity, there are ways to save on the cost of car insurance. Listed below are 15 realistic approaches to help everyone reduce their premiums.

Multiple Line Discount - one can take advantage of deep discounts by insuring all cars, boats, homes, and apartments with one insurance company.

Update agent if recently laid off or work from home - Driving less miles per week, usually less than 100 per week can reduce your policy rate.

Safe Driving Discount - You might eligible for a discount if you have been free of accidents and tickets for several years.

Raise your deductible - Raising you deductible can save you hundreds of dollars every year, but make sure you have money saved to cover the higher deductible if needed.

Comparison shop - Let your agent know that you are looking at other agencies to reduce your monthly premium; it is likely the agent will pull some strings to keep you as a customer. Caution: if you find a better deal, confirm that it is not an introductory price. Many times your premium will increase to what you were paying with your previous insurance agent.

Discount for parents under 25 - Car insurance companies reduce their policy holders premium at the age of 25 assuming there have been no accidents, some insurance companies offer this reduction for parents under that age of 25. However, another reduction will not apply once you turn 25.

Full coverage or liability - An insurance company will not spend more money repairing a car than it is worth. Therefore, check the value of your car using Kelley Blue Book and determine whether full coverage if still needed or if it is best to switch to liability.

Get insurance quotes before you buy a vehicle and choose vehicle color - the type, model and color will affect you premium. If you don’t want your premium to increase stay away from red sports cars. Also popular foreign models such as Toyota and Honda might have high premiums because they are stolen regularly.

Don’t buy short-term policies - There might be a penalty so buy long-term.

Don’t let your insurance lapse - A lapsed insurance policy indicates irresponsibility and high-risk. Avoid this at all cost. When you are ready to renew you will notice that your cost will have jumped tremendously.

Only insure cars that are driven - Cars that are inoperable do not need to be insured. To avoid any complications or penalties with your state, make sure your car is registered as ‘inoperable’.

Refresh your driving skills - confirm that the money you save when your premium is lowered outweighs the cost of the training courses.

Don’t hit anything or get a ticket - Your fault or not, this can increase your policy rate for several years. Keep your eyes on the road. Avoid tickets. Speeding tickets and other moving violations can push your rates up substantially and these, like accidents, usually affect your insurance for 3-5 years.

Don’t insure teenager driver with your car - Premiums for a teenager driver is through the roof. Instead, purchase a safe, used car and only purchase liability. You will save hundreds of dollars.

Have good credit score- I don’t agree with this step for determining policy price, but some insurance companies are now using credit scores to calculate the cost of your premium. High credit scores have lower premiums and low credit scores have high premiums. Keep your score high.

Pay semi-annually - This is my favorite!! A surcharge fee is generally applied to customers who pay monthly. This fee is easily avoided by paying semi-annually. Begin to save up enough money to make the 1st semi-annual payment. After you make that payment, automatically transfer the monthly insurance payment into a high-yield savings account to earn interest. When you receive your semi-annual bill, pull money from your high-yield savings account to cover your premium cost. Any money earned from interest is profit.

Out of the 15 options listed above, I hope at least one of them will help you save money on your car insurance.

Movie Downloads Provide An Economical Way To Watch Your Favorite Films

Sunday, July 26th, 2009

Have you been looking for a way to get your favorite movies, on the go? Wish you could find an easier way to watch your favorite stars without having to lug around DVDs? A really great way to get your movie fix on is with movie downloads. When you download movies online, you will have full power over when and what you watch while you’re out and about.

There are numerous free movie download sites online. You need to be very careful when you’re searching for movies. There are plenty of sites that offer their services completely free, but these may be pirated copies of movies. This is not only illegal for them to post the movies, if anyone ever wanted to, they could find you guilty, as well. No movie, no matter how great, is worth jail time.

As much as we’d like to all believe that everyone is as pure of heart as we are, this isn’t always the case. Many times, sites are disguised as free download sites but once you open up access between your computer and their network, you’ve become the victim of an internet crime. You can end up with worms, viruses and even identity hijacking if you don’t use a trustworthy place to get your movie downloads.

How can you tell the difference? Ask around, for one thing. Your friends may know about the places to go and the places to avoid. You can also run a search of any internet site through business bureaus that give you the skinny on the companies that are behind the sites. Many companies that offer at home movie DVDs give you instant access to movie downloads on their sties. This is a great way to get all of your entertainment needs met. You can get your favorite movies sent right to your house and you can also get movie downloads for your computer and other portable multimedia devices.

Movie companies know that people can’t afford to go out to the movies like they used to. Far more people are staying in these days than going out. In an effort to win back viewing audiences, many movie companies are offering their movie downloads for next to nothing, online. In many cases, you can go directly to the corporate site of the movie studio and download their films, in their entirety. You’ll also get special bonus features that aren’t even available on DVD.

Sometimes it’s hard to find independent or foreign films in local stores. You can often buy them from online auction sites, but you’re never guaranteed on the quality. Save yourself time and money-get movie downloads of even those hard to find gems, online.

Movie downloads are a great solution for business travelers and people on the go. No longer will you get entertainment in flight on most of the major US airlines. Unless you’re flying transatlantic, you probably won’t get a movie to watch. Find something to do with your time besides count the hairs on the back of the neck of the passenger in the seat in front of you. Take all the movies you want to see with you, without having to lug around a DVD player or movies.

Keeping the kids happy when you’re flying is of utmost importance if you’re hoping to have a peaceful flight. Movie downloads present you with a great opportunity for a little peace and quiet on the plane or in the airport. Sit the kids down with your laptop or favorite multimedia device and push play. The time will pass quickly for the kids and silently for you. Who couldn’t use a little down time when you’re busy traveling across country?

When you want the very best in entertainment, find a good, reliable source for online movie downloads. Get today’s hottest hits, safely and easily, right from your desktop. Go with a well known company and you’ll be watching your favorite stars in no time, anywhere you take your computer.

Easy Ways To Save Money

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

With the economy in the toilet everyone is looking for creative ways to save money effectively. Rather than going out to buy expensive shoes and dining out every night, we are socking money away and being more frugal with what we buy. One of the things we learned is that saving money really isn’t as hard as it sounds. Here are some more of the best ways to save money.

First, when you’re reading your local newspaper, clip out the coupons. Most coupons will save you between 30 cents up to two or three dollars or more. That doesn’t sound like a lot of money now, but each week you can save around $10, which is $520 over the course of the year! I don’t know anybody who wouldn’t be interested in saving an extra five hundred dollars, do you?

Next, how often do you buy items the first place you see them? More often than not the first place you see a product is not the cheapest place you could see a product. Shopping around is a great way to save money and with almost every company having their merchandise on their website you can comparison shop from the comfort of your own home. Take a few extra minutes and find the best price, it can really add up.

How many of you are impulse shoppers that run out and buy something as soon as you want it? I admit I am too, but it’s a terrible habit if you’re looking to save some money. As I mentioned in the previous paragraph, comparison shopping is a great way to save money, but impulse buying pretty much ensures that you aren’t comparing prices at all. If you don’t need something, wait until you see it on sale somewhere and buy it then. A little patience can go a long way in keeping money in your wallet.

When you go shopping, do you buy name brand items only? A lot of us do, but generics are a fraction of the cost and often times are the exact same product. I don’t mean a similar product, I mean the exact same thing, just in a cheaper package that allows the store to sell it for less. Many of us stick up our noses at generics, but you really shouldn’t. Theyre a great way to get the products you love for a fraction of the price.

Last, we need to remember not to live paycheck to paycheck. By forming a budget that we actually stick to we will have a lot more money at the end of the week. I know this sounds like common sense, but people spend way more money than they make and end up paying interest to credit card companies, instead of spending that same money on things we want. Understanding how much you have and how much you can spend is vital if you want to save money every month.

Repossessed Cars for Sale - The Most Preferred Second Hand Vehicles

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

There are many reasons why some people prefer to purchase repossessed cars for sale than any other second hand or pre-owned vehicle. Most repossessed vehicles are in top condition and still look new. Best of all, these vehicles are being auctioned at a very low price.

Coming up with a decision to buy a car is a major financial decision for a lot of individuals. For those who are living under a limited budget, buying a second hand car seems to be a more practical decision. Repossessed cars are excellent choice when it comes to second hand vehicles. Aside from the fact that most of these cars are in great condition and are still relatively new, they had not been involved in major accidents.

When buying a repossessed car, you are more assured that the car is in a better running condition as compared to buying a car in an automobile repair shop or any second hand car shop. For your peace of mind and security, ask questions about the car that you are about to purchase. Check out the parts, engine and other features to make sure that you are getting value for your money.

Repossessed cars that are on sale can be found in auctions sponsored by lending groups or credit companies, banks and local police offices. These cars had been pulled out or “repossessed” by the bank or credit company because the owner failed to pay its regular amortization or had trouble with the payments like issuance of a bouncing check.

There are also some repossessed cars that had been impounded by the local authorities secondary to law violations. In some instances, the car had been seized by law enforcers because it was used for illegal operations.

Car fanatics or serious buyers can consider repossessed cars being put on sale as great finds. The prices are considerably low as compared to other second hand cars that are being sold elsewhere. So a person who has a limited budget in buying a car can possibly land on something that is beyond expectations since these cars cost much less than their actual value. If a certain buyer is lucky enough, he or she can take advantage of as much as 90% off the original price. That is indeed great value for his or her money!

If you want to know where to find repossessed cars on sale in your area, you can start inquiring from credit companies, banks and local police offices as to when the auctions are usually held. You may also do your search online. Another option is to check out the ads in your local newspaper or the announcements in your local community boards.

Can I Really Get Cheap And Safe Babysitting In This Economy Crisis?

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

Childcare can be one of the most expensive services that families have to pay for. With a global economy crisis happening, many families are feeling the crunch of trying to reduce their household expenses. Beyond coupons and finding opportunities to buy for cheap, the need to greatly reduce their budget to make ends meet is a very pressing issue for many. But, there are other ways to get cheap and reliable childcare, even as families are going through the economy crisis.

Here are 2 ways to reduce the overall expense of childcare and still ensure that your child is safe and happy:

Develop a babysitting “co-op” with a few close families that also have children. Together, create a plan that will allow for you all to realize a financial saving on childcare by watching each others’ children. If you are already close, then your children will know each family and will feel safe and comfortable being with them. By breaking up the childcare into bit that each family can handle, everyone will benefit

Pretty much, you just set up a schedule that works for everyone, which would allow for people to have special nights out, daily afterschool care, or full weekend coverage. Plan on a quarterly basis to keep it flexible, open, and fair. It would be even better if you make a pact to offer special activities, low or no cost, for the children, such as learning certain skills or participating in certain free community programs when they are in each family’s care. That will keep the kids from being bored and the families from feeling overwhelmed.

Another possibility is to get your own family involved. Many people have a young or unattached relative that would probably love to mind your children. If you have a relative that is a college student or that would like to stay someplace for practically free, then a live-in situation could work for all of you. With everyone trying to save a few dollars, your family could really save a lot of money.

The cost of weekly childcare at a professional day care center can run a family upwards of $300-400 per child. Just by having a live-in childcare arrangement in place, a family realizes a huge saving. Cost-reduction for live-in childcare could be as much as 75% or about $200 savings per week. It’s definitely worth it for everyone involved. The children get the attention and love of a family member, you get peace of mind that your child is safe, and the relative gets to save a few dollars which could really help them to manage their own costs of living.

Your family will appreciate the saving, cost reduction, and opportunity to try a new way of getting your childcare taken care of with these two easy methods. During this economy crisis, everyone is looking for alternatives that will work for their families. Reducing your child care expense could be just the break that your family budget needs!

Three Simple Ways To Get More Green From Your Home Office During This Economy Crisis

Monday, July 6th, 2009

Going green is good for the planet and for your personal financial savings. Your home office is a perfect place to start when it comes to trying to find ways to be more environmentally friendly and still enjoy the things that makes working from home a wonderful personal choice such as no commuting, very little “office politics”, and being able to dress how you want. All of these offer more than just a psychological respite, they also offer a financial saving incentive that has become even more valuable during this economy crisis.

Though you are probably wracking up a great financial saving, cost-conscious people can still save a little more by doing more when it comes to the environment. It actually doesn’t take a whole lot to be more green, it just means that you have be a little more conscientious about how you use what you already have. Here are 3 great ways to green up your office and your company’s financial state:

First, make every effort to make full use of that office paper. Buy for cheap all of the paper that you anticipate needing by using coupons, other office supply store discounts, or buying from a thrift store. You could even get the paper free if check companies that give away their surplus or scrap paper that can be recycled.

Once you get the paper, use all parts of it. Print on double sides whenever it is professionally accepted, use shredded paper for stuffing packages, and make notepads from the scraps or blank “half” pages that you have left over. Of course, you should always strive to maintain a professional image, but for home files and other incidentals, get the most out that paper.

Second, go digital with your filing and faxing. Instead of using paper for these tasks, you can sign up with an online faxing service, many of which are free or offer subscriptions that you can by for cheap, that allow for your faxes to go directly to your email for electronic filing. You will save financially and you will help the planet by producing less paper and metal waste from those file folders.

The other way to max out the savings and get the maximum green effect in your home office is to decorate it and furnish it with recycled furnishings. Buy for cheap good quality furniture from office surplus stores, clearance sales, thrift stores, and of course, yard sales and you will be able to have a beautifully furnished office for pennies on the dollar. In this economy crisis, finding ways to help our pockets can mean the difference between a successful business and one that struggles through this difficult financial time. In the long term, if our efforts help the environment, that’s an even better endeavor.

Find lots of previously owned stuff that you can get for free through sites like FREECYCLE.com and Craigslist. Don’t leave off the auction sites like Ebay, which will also offer fantastic savings your office supply needs. Whether you buy for cheap or get stuff totally free, just try to make the most of these great saving, cost-cutting opportunities that also are wonderful for the environment.

Creativity, planning, and a little research are key to finding items that will work for your home office that can save you money and be a part of saving the environment. During this economy crisis, people are looking for ways to get more for less or get more out of what they have. Research, recycle, and reuse to get your office as green as the money that you’ll be saving with your effort!
