15 Ways To Save Money On Car Insurance

Sunday, July 26th, 2009

Everybody hates bills, so why should car insurance premiums be any different. And just like other bills, such as cable, grocery shopping, and electricity, there are ways to save on the cost of car insurance. Listed below are 15 realistic approaches to help everyone reduce their premiums.

Multiple Line Discount - one can take advantage of deep discounts by insuring all cars, boats, homes, and apartments with one insurance company.

Update agent if recently laid off or work from home - Driving less miles per week, usually less than 100 per week can reduce your policy rate.

Safe Driving Discount - You might eligible for a discount if you have been free of accidents and tickets for several years.

Raise your deductible - Raising you deductible can save you hundreds of dollars every year, but make sure you have money saved to cover the higher deductible if needed.

Comparison shop - Let your agent know that you are looking at other agencies to reduce your monthly premium; it is likely the agent will pull some strings to keep you as a customer. Caution: if you find a better deal, confirm that it is not an introductory price. Many times your premium will increase to what you were paying with your previous insurance agent.

Discount for parents under 25 - Car insurance companies reduce their policy holders premium at the age of 25 assuming there have been no accidents, some insurance companies offer this reduction for parents under that age of 25. However, another reduction will not apply once you turn 25.

Full coverage or liability - An insurance company will not spend more money repairing a car than it is worth. Therefore, check the value of your car using Kelley Blue Book and determine whether full coverage if still needed or if it is best to switch to liability.

Get insurance quotes before you buy a vehicle and choose vehicle color - the type, model and color will affect you premium. If you don’t want your premium to increase stay away from red sports cars. Also popular foreign models such as Toyota and Honda might have high premiums because they are stolen regularly.

Don’t buy short-term policies - There might be a penalty so buy long-term.

Don’t let your insurance lapse - A lapsed insurance policy indicates irresponsibility and high-risk. Avoid this at all cost. When you are ready to renew you will notice that your cost will have jumped tremendously.

Only insure cars that are driven - Cars that are inoperable do not need to be insured. To avoid any complications or penalties with your state, make sure your car is registered as ‘inoperable’.

Refresh your driving skills - confirm that the money you save when your premium is lowered outweighs the cost of the training courses.

Don’t hit anything or get a ticket - Your fault or not, this can increase your policy rate for several years. Keep your eyes on the road. Avoid tickets. Speeding tickets and other moving violations can push your rates up substantially and these, like accidents, usually affect your insurance for 3-5 years.

Don’t insure teenager driver with your car - Premiums for a teenager driver is through the roof. Instead, purchase a safe, used car and only purchase liability. You will save hundreds of dollars.

Have good credit score- I don’t agree with this step for determining policy price, but some insurance companies are now using credit scores to calculate the cost of your premium. High credit scores have lower premiums and low credit scores have high premiums. Keep your score high.

Pay semi-annually - This is my favorite!! A surcharge fee is generally applied to customers who pay monthly. This fee is easily avoided by paying semi-annually. Begin to save up enough money to make the 1st semi-annual payment. After you make that payment, automatically transfer the monthly insurance payment into a high-yield savings account to earn interest. When you receive your semi-annual bill, pull money from your high-yield savings account to cover your premium cost. Any money earned from interest is profit.

Out of the 15 options listed above, I hope at least one of them will help you save money on your car insurance.

Repossessed Cars for Sale - The Most Preferred Second Hand Vehicles

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

There are many reasons why some people prefer to purchase repossessed cars for sale than any other second hand or pre-owned vehicle. Most repossessed vehicles are in top condition and still look new. Best of all, these vehicles are being auctioned at a very low price.

Coming up with a decision to buy a car is a major financial decision for a lot of individuals. For those who are living under a limited budget, buying a second hand car seems to be a more practical decision. Repossessed cars are excellent choice when it comes to second hand vehicles. Aside from the fact that most of these cars are in great condition and are still relatively new, they had not been involved in major accidents.

When buying a repossessed car, you are more assured that the car is in a better running condition as compared to buying a car in an automobile repair shop or any second hand car shop. For your peace of mind and security, ask questions about the car that you are about to purchase. Check out the parts, engine and other features to make sure that you are getting value for your money.

Repossessed cars that are on sale can be found in auctions sponsored by lending groups or credit companies, banks and local police offices. These cars had been pulled out or “repossessed” by the bank or credit company because the owner failed to pay its regular amortization or had trouble with the payments like issuance of a bouncing check.

There are also some repossessed cars that had been impounded by the local authorities secondary to law violations. In some instances, the car had been seized by law enforcers because it was used for illegal operations.

Car fanatics or serious buyers can consider repossessed cars being put on sale as great finds. The prices are considerably low as compared to other second hand cars that are being sold elsewhere. So a person who has a limited budget in buying a car can possibly land on something that is beyond expectations since these cars cost much less than their actual value. If a certain buyer is lucky enough, he or she can take advantage of as much as 90% off the original price. That is indeed great value for his or her money!

If you want to know where to find repossessed cars on sale in your area, you can start inquiring from credit companies, banks and local police offices as to when the auctions are usually held. You may also do your search online. Another option is to check out the ads in your local newspaper or the announcements in your local community boards.

Repair Bills - Green Cash Down The Drain

Saturday, July 4th, 2009

Consider these numbers: $1500 for an insignificant scratch on the bodywork; $3500 for a new exhaust valve; at least $150 for a new trunk-release switch cover. These aren’t figures from the realm of fantasy, but actual repair expenses that drivers have provided to AOL Autos after having coughed up these amounts for repair jobs that only seemed small. The alternative is to do the job yourself, or buy a new car. That seems extreme, right? So just pay up like a good citizen and suffer in silence, seems to be the mantra.

Stump up for the Bumper

Deana May, at Los Angeles-based AC Auto finishing, is aware of the surprises a store has for even a car brought in with just a minor scratch. According to May, “It’s a scary thing — looks can be deceiving. You can do an estimate on a front bumper then take it off and behind it there’s all kinds of damage. Low-profile cars with low-profile tires go over a bump or up a driveway, they don’t take an angle, often they need a whole new front end.” In addition, problems of these types arrive frequently at her shop. Last month a Lotus driver was billed a sum of $5,400 for his car repairing; however, after verifying the condition she had to agree. She informs about the possible dangers and costs of drivers receiving incorrect quotes for the upkeep with high-performance components, like for an AMG, for a Mercedes or Brabus.

Cracked Grille and Fender Bender

Willy Stroppe, president of automotive engineering firm Bill Stroppe & Sons in Paramount, California, says he once looked at what seemed like insignificant damage to the front of a Ford pickup truck that ultimately became a huge repair bill. It looked like the front plastic grille was broken by a light hit, but when we got into it the housing behind the grille was cracked and broken all the way up. Replacing everything from the fenders, to the headlight vessels, to a new front end, it all adds up. In many cases you gotta pull out the radiator. That’s not something you can do in a couple hours. Stroppes seen similar problems on a Ford Explorer ” he works mainly with Fords ” and the pickups repair bill crossed $1200. Its not like the old days when everything was steel, he adds. He also says that second hand car buyers should beware of a practice hes seen plenty of in nearly 50 years in the car business ” a repair shop buys a car whose frame and shell seem fine but whose inside needs a lot of work, for example, on its suspension. Often, says Stroppe, an unscrupulous shop will make the car roadworthy with a substandard repair job, and then sell it on to an unknowing buyer, leaving room for a huge future repair bill.

$150 Cover Up

Mark Essig, a writer in a small town in North Carolina, was astonished to find a repair bill of $150 on his car by a local mechanic just to replace a missing cover for the trunk-release switch in his ten-year-old Mercedes 320 CLK. Though such expensive repair bills are no longer a surprise for upscale European marques, Essig says, this one really took the cake for its icing on a already frosty $2000 repair bill which he did not expect in the first place. He says that this was not included in the estimate and it came as an additional cost. He says: “It was part of a $2000 repair bill that included valve cleaning and brake work, and I was so sick to my stomach that I couldn’t quibble over $150. Best part was, I didn’t ask him to do it.” Another story involves a Porsche 944 owner, Michael Russell, an AOL Autos friend who too his old-school German car for repair and got more than he bargained for in the form of $3,500 repair bill including labor cost in place of $15 exhaust valve replacement which was what he expected it to be. He says, that they had to rip out the engine to get to the valve, which had burned out, a common enough problem in older performance vehicles. Since without the repair, he had no way of getting to work, he had to grit his teeth and bear the cost.

Air Pressure

It is advised to search out a second opinion, and always review general system reliability as you decide to replace individual parts on older-model cars. Look into this story to know the brutal truth of car repair: I found this to my cost when I took my wife’s 1995 Nissan 240SX S-ER to my local mechanic’s last week to fix the air conditioning. I’d already taken it into the shop the week before, where they’d diagnosed a leaking gasket that had depressurized the system. So they duly fixed the gasket, re-filled the system with Freon coolant and pressurized it. Bill: $300. Not bad for an AC fix, I thought, until two days later the system again began blowing hot. So it was back into the shop, where they took a second look at it before telling me another seal had broken, this time in a hard-to-reach spot, meaning extra labor. Estimated cost: $800. When I pointed out that the original fix was under warranty, my mechanic agreed but argued that a different component had malfunctioned and therefore the additional repair was not under warranty. Many more attempts at bargaining failed. Result: I’m $300 out of pocket, and my wife has a long, hot summer to look forward to (unless she nabs my car, which is likely).

Chilling Coolant, Hot Cost

Ken Lavacot of www.2carpros.com advises you to never ignore little signs. A bit of steam coming out of the exhaust may seem like nothing, but it could be a warning of huge repair bills. For example, he says, “Coolant is normally used to cool the engine, but if coolant gets into the combustion chamber, the engine will burn it, generating white smoke and steam.” Among the expensive solutions is gasket replacement. “If the gasket that seals the intake manifold to the cylinder head fails it lets coolant into the intake port and then the combustion chamber. In which case, the intake manifold will need to be removed.” And getting to the gasket and reassembling the parts once it is replaced is the expensive bit. If there is coolant in the combustion chamber but the gasket is functioning, Lavacot says the engine must be taken apart. He adds: “This can be tricky because it is difficult to tell what is causing the problem. For example: A repair shop has told you the cylinder head is cracked, and as they start disassembly they can discover it was the intake manifold gasket that has failed. An honest repair shop will inform the customer that the repair bill will be lower. Or the opposite can happen. A repair shop may tell you that your engine has a blown head gasket, but once the disassembly is complete they inform you that the head gasket is fine, and so is the cylinder, which has been pressure checked. This only leaves the engine block as the failure and must be replaced, and that can be costly.”

Paintwork Blues

My brother-in-law had lent his Jaguar convertible to a family member who took it to a wedding. He returned it with a scratch in the back panel on the driver’s side. Generally, a good repair or bodywork shop can erase scuffs at minimal cost, but the Jaguar XK8’s aluminum shell demanded a costly adhesive to repair the scratch to prevent further corrosion or damage of the car’s monocoque shell. The whole repair work was as costly as $1500. The technician told him that he was blessed the scratch was light otherwise repairs might turn out double or triple in cost, an increasingly general incident as more luxury carmakers counting Audi, Mercedes and BMW harness the aluminum-shell technology (taking advantage of its increased strength and lighter weight). So, it is better to get several estimates for the paintwork. It is also better to think twice before you lend your precious car.

Finding Cheap Auto Insurance in Three Steps

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

Introduction

Finding and purchasing cheap auto insurance has changed dramatically over the last few years. While it was once very easy to find cheap car insurance, the change in our economy, the growth of drivers (which has caused an increase in car accidents), and the increase cost of claims (we are driving more expensive cars which cost more to repair), it is now more complicated to find cheap car insurance.

Thanks to technology, however, finding affordable insurance coverage can still be done, and with three simple steps. Now you can find an insurance policy that could save you a considerable amount of money.

Step One - Coverage: What do you want? What do you really need?

Purchasing the cheapest auto insurance will mean that your payments are going to be lower; however, this may not be the best situation for your insurance needs. Some people feel better with more protection for themselves and their families while other times, due to the regulations imposed by their auto financing lender, a person will be required to have more coverage. Simply getting cheap auto insurance may not cover all that needs to be covered. What you, as a consumer, should aim for is getting an affordable insurance policy instead.

Step Two - Quotes

The first thing you should do is to get competitive quotes from multiple agents. Nowadays, quotes are delivered to you instantly so that you can review the offers at your leisure and make the best choice for your coverage. Once you have the quotes in front of you, and you have a pretty good idea what coverage you need; you can easily begin to compare and quickly decide which one is right for you.

One of the downsides to getting multiple quotes in the past was having to repeatedly fill out forms with the same information over and over again. With an online free quote tool, you will only have to fill out this basic information once, saving you a lot of time and frustration.

There are many benefits to using a free quote tool. Your current insurance carrier is not going to inform you of how they stack up to other insurance companies; unfortunately, there are not required to either. However, you as a consumer can check up on current rates as often as you would like. In addition, you can also check the reputation of the companies that submit quotes for your car insurance needs.

Here’s a bonus tip for the future that can save you hundreds of dollars: You should compare your rates and policy limits every two years. It’s almost frightening how fast things change in the insurance industry. By checking every two years, you give yourself the opportunity of taking advantage of new or special lower rates as well as new discounts.

Step Three - Discount: You have the advantage

There are many discounts available to drivers. They are based on things like your driving record, your credit score, your age, the age of other drivers in your vehicle, how often you drive, how far you drive daily, whether you are college educated, if you are a good student, and so much more. You must check around with different insurance companies to check their discounts, some offers what others do not.

Often times, the best discounts can be had when you purchase combined services such as life, or health insurance along with your auto insurance, the most common combination, however, is car and homeowners (or renters) insurance. Also, if have taken a defensive driving course or you are planning to, you could be in line for valuable discounts as well. Lastly, make sure and check what insurance is required for your cars condition. You do not want to over pay for auto insurance.

Conclusion

While it is true that finding cheap auto insurance is not as easy as it used to be, having the right information at the ready can certainly help you find the best rates possible. You need to make sure you know the discounts you are eligible for and remember to request them. By using these three easy steps, you can save yourself time and money, and you can make buying cheap car insurance quick and easy.

How To Save On Car Premiums With Anti-Theft Devices

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

You can cut the cost of your car insurance by confirming with your insurer the premium discount that you can avail for outfitting the car being insured with the applicable anti-theft device. Insurance companies normally offer special discounts and cutbacks on the amount of premium in consideration to the security system and anti-theft device installed in your car. When you are scouting for the best priced car insurance policy, don?t fail to clarify with your insurance agent the discounts that they can offer to you for the device or security system that you are using in your vehicle.

These car security gadgets and anti-theft devices are generally categorized into three major classes. These include the mechanical locks and latches, the electronic car alarm devices and the electronic immobilizer and tracking system. You have to understand how each of these security systems serves as effective deterrent to car thieves and the savings that you can generate when availing for discounts on your premiums.

The mechanical anti-theft devices are used to control the movement of the steering wheel. This will prevent your car being driven once this mechanical device is installed. These mechanical immobilizers are a good alternative to high tech electronic gadgetries that are very common in the market today. It relies on its ability to restrict access and control the movement of the vehicle and the most common device under this category of anti-theft device is the steering wheel lock bar. While this latch bar is the most common, there are also other protective devices which are equally reliable and these include the lock bars for the gear shifts, tires and the brake pedals. The upside of this type of anti-theft device is that it is conspicuous making it an effective deterrent to car thieves. Nonetheless, police officials recommend that these devices be used in conjunction with the other types of anti-theft or security alarm systems.

If you prefer the modern gadgetry for the security system for your car, then you have to make your choice from the devices that fall under the major category of security alarm systems. These electronic gadgets are generally motion-activated alarm systems. The system produces a deafening alarm in case of forcible entry, sudden movements and nudges and perimeter breaks. The alarm serves as a deterrent for potential theft as it is easily activated under the previously listed threat scenarios.

On the other hand, the third type of car security devices provides security by reporting the location of the vehicle by triangulation. These electronic devices operate through a car tracking system that relays the exact location of the car to the car owner. It also comes with a feature to identify the car using a tamper-proof VIN etching ID process. Some models of this car tracking system are also capable of electronically disabling the vehicle by isolating the power system in the event that it is driven off by car thieves.

The final aspect of the decision making process is the confirmation from your insurance agent or the car insurance provider of the inclusions under the discounted premium of car insurance policies. On the other hand, if you are looking for the right anti-theft device and security system, it is essential that you consider the discounts that you can get from premiums with each of the gadgets you are seriously considering.

New research and development has been based greatly on “hybrid” vehicles. They use both electric power and internal combustion. Despite, there are more alternative fuel cars being developed. Most are classified as zero emission vehicles, or ZEHs, because no emissions are produced when running. Electrical energy for these cars are obtained from a array of battery chemistry’s arranged intro battery packs. BEVs mainly use lead-acid batteries, NiMH batteries, and lithium-ion batteries.

Six Tips to Help You Successfully Buy a Used Car

Monday, June 8th, 2009

If you are not familiar with the process of buying a used car the whole procedure can be an extremely daunting affair, especially when there are a number of unscrupulous sellers out there waiting to catch out unsuspecting buyers. However providing you have done some preparation and had the vehicle carefully checked out its very easy to grab yourself a bargain.

Before setting out to buy a used car sit down and work out your finances to know exactly how much you can afford to spend on this new purchase. It is important to also consider the running costs, including fuel, insurance and servicing and remember to factor in the additional cost of loan repayments if you are looking to raise additional finance to make the purchase.

Your budget is the beginning of what you need to know before purchasing a vehicle. You need to use your financial statements to figure the top purchase price you are willing to spend. The price of a vehicle is dependent on certain factors: the mileage, age, and model. An older vehicle will be less than a 2009 model. The top financial number once obtained will allow you to use magazines, newspapers, and the internet to narrow down the available vehicles for you.

Anticipation may encourage you to view a vehicle, but before you make the appointment there are some research aspects you need to do. You will need to explore what other sellers are offering the same vehicle for by looking at the price, mileage, and condition. Also find out if there are any additions to the car such as alloy wheels, CD changer, or turbo charger. The lack of extras on a vehicle you are thinking about purchasing can help you negotiate the price.

When you view the vehicle do not let the seller distract you or try to hasten you. You need time to make sure you see any problems the vehicle might have. You should never examine the car in the rain since it can hide body issues. For those who are not well versed in mechanics there are inspection businesses which can overlook the vehicle for you. You can also take a friend that might be better equipped for the inspection. An HPI check needs to be completed so that you know it has not been stolen or written off.

Test drives on any vehicle should take twenty minutes. While driving the car check the gearbox, steering, and listen for any noises. The gears should transition smoothly. For steering the vehicle should stay straight on the road. During the drive do an emergency check of the brakes.

If you decide to purchase the used car you need to remain firm, but considerate. Do not allow anyone to exert pressure on the deal. When you begin the bargaining offer a lower price than what you want for the car. You can increase the price later in the discussion if it is warranted. You also want to mention any issues you found during the drive and inspection to help decide a price.

Once the deal has been completed the owner of the vehicle needs to submit a V5 registration form. The form must have your details and the receipt of sale. You may also think about a warranty product to ensure your vehicle is protected while giving you peace of mind to drive down the road in your used car.
